The second is assuming a higher tier is strictly better for every task regardless of what the task actually requires. The spectrum is a directional trade, so a higher tier is better only when the task needs the extra capability enough to justify the slower response. For structured, high-volume work, the higher tier is worse in practice because it is slower without improving the outcome. Both traps stem from treating the spectrum as a quality ranking rather than a trade.

A colleague says: 'Just always use the most capable model -- it's the best one, so it can only help.' Two tasks are on the table: tagging ten thousand support tickets by category, and writing a delicate, high-stakes negotiation summary. How does the spectrum reframe the advice?
The advice mistakes the spectrum for a quality ranking, where Opus is simply the best and everything else is a compromise. It is not a ranking; it is a trade of depth against speed in a consistent direction. "Most capable" also means "slowest," and that cost only earns its keep when the task actually needs the capability.
Apply that to the two tasks. Tagging ten thousand tickets is structured, high-volume work where speed is the binding constraint and each item is simple. Running it on the most capable, slowest tier makes it slower across every one of the ten thousand items without producing better tags -- the capability has nothing to bite on. Haiku, at the fast end of the spectrum, is the better fit precisely because the task's demands sit low on the spectrum.
The negotiation summary is the opposite: nuanced, high-stakes, and ambiguous, where a better answer materially matters and the volume is one. Here the depth at the top of the spectrum is worth the slower response, so Opus fits. The reframed advice is that neither task wants "the best model" in the abstract; each wants the tier whose position on the spectrum matches its actual demands.
