A cited source is not a verified claim
Both mechanisms can return information with sources attached, and that citation is easy to mistake for validation. It is not. A source next to a claim tells you where the claim came from; it does not tell you the claim is correct, current, or applicable to your situation. Synthesis built on retrieved information can still carry unverified claims, and the presence of a citation does not change that.
This is why the synthesis-versus-calculation discipline extends here. Retrieval changes where a claim comes from, but it does not lift the burden of checking anything the plan will actually depend on. For a figure that drives a decision, retrieval is not enough on its own; the number still belongs in a verifiable method such as code execution if the plan rests on it. The verification posture is constant across sources: treat retrieved claims as leads to check, not as facts to bank.
What the CCAO-F exam trips candidates on
The exam tests two traps. The first is using a quick chat web search for a question that actually needs multi-source, Research-depth synthesis. A scenario may describe a plan requiring a broad current picture and show someone reaching for a single narrow lookup; the credited move is to recognise that the depth of the question calls for Research. The second trap is treating information returned by web search or Research as automatically verified just because it cites a source. The exam wants you to hold the verification line: a citation is provenance, not proof, and any claim driving a decision still needs checking.
Both traps come down to reading two things correctly, the depth of the question and the status of a retrieved claim. Depth decides the mechanism; verification discipline decides how far you trust what comes back.

A team is building a plan to enter a new regional market and needs current context: the competitive landscape, recent regulatory changes, and pricing norms in that region, all of which post-date the model's training. One analyst plans to run a single chat web search for 'market conditions' and paste the result into the plan. Is that the right mechanism, and how should the results be treated?
The mechanism is mismatched to the question. What the team needs is not a single current fact but a synthesised current picture drawn from many sources: competitors, regulators, and pricing all at once. A single narrow web search is built for a bounded one-source lookup, so it will return a thin answer to a question that actually spans several sources. This is the first trap, using a quick lookup where the depth calls for Research.
The right choice is the Research feature, which gathers across multiple sources and synthesises the broader context the plan needs. The tell was in the question itself: no single source answers "the competitive, regulatory, and pricing landscape of a region", so it needs multi-source synthesis rather than a narrow lookup.
The second issue is what to do with the output. Even a well-sourced Research synthesis is not automatically verified. The regulatory claims that will shape real decisions, and any pricing figures the plan depends on, need to be checked against their sources and, where they drive the numbers, put through a verifiable method rather than accepted because a citation sits beside them. Research supplies the depth; the verification discipline supplies the trust. Getting both right is the point.
