Front-loading those constraints collapses the field before it exists.
This two-phase shape - diverge, then narrow - is the heart of brainstorming calibration. Worked example
A marketer wants the widest possible set of campaign concepts. Their prompt reads: 'Brainstorm campaign ideas, but each must be one word, under eight letters, avoid these twelve terms, and match our exact brand-voice guidelines.' They get a handful of similar, safe ideas. What went wrong and how should it be calibrated?
The prompt is a brainstorm in name only. It stacks detailed constraints - a one-word format, an eight-letter limit, twelve banned terms, and full brand-voice compliance - onto the generation step, which is exactly the over-specification trap. Each constraint prunes the possibility space before Claude has explored it, so instead of diverging widely Claude produces a few similar, safe ideas that squeeze through all the filters. The looseness that generates range was removed up front, and range cannot be recovered from ideas that were never generated. Functionally, all that tight specification has turned this into something closer to an analysis prompt than a brainstorm.
The calibration is to split it into the two natural phases. In the generation step, state only the goal and a guardrail or two - "Give me 20 campaign angles for faster month-end close; range widely and do not self-edit yet" - and let divergence happen. Then, in a separate narrowing step, apply the detailed constraints to the field you now have: filter to one-word options under eight letters, drop anything using the banned terms, and refine the survivors against the brand voice. Same constraints, later placement. The result is a wide set of ideas first and a filtered, on-brand shortlist second - which is what the marketer actually wanted.
