Where each type sits on the dial

Why one fixed style fails
The practical consequence of the dial is that no single prompting habit serves all four types. If your default is tight specification, you will do fine on analysis and research, produce serviceable drafts, and quietly ruin brainstorms by constraining away the divergence that was the whole point. If your default is loose and open, you will get lively brainstorms and hedged, uncommitted analyses that never rank or decide anything.
This is why the exam treats task type as more than a wording nuance. The type does not just change a few words; it changes which components you tighten and which you loosen. Adapting strategy to task type is what separates a competent prompter from one who gets the same mediocre output on everything, because they applied the same dial setting to tasks that needed different ones. What the CCAO-F exam trips candidates on
Two traps recur, and both come from ignoring the dial.
The first is applying the same tightly constrained style to a brainstorming request, which suppresses the range of ideas produced. A scenario asks for wide-ranging ideas but loads the prompt with detailed constraints, and a distractor treats the heavy specification as thoroughness. The credited reading is that brainstorming wants latitude - tight constraints here collapse the divergence that was the goal.
The second is assuming task type only affects wording rather than which components should be tightened versus loosened. A scenario changes phrasing to suit the task but keeps the same control setting. The reliable reading is that adapting to task type means moving the dial - tightening criteria for analysis, loosening constraints for brainstorming - not just swapping vocabulary. The type determines the calibration, not just the words.
Worked example
A user has a single go-to prompting style: they always specify heavily - exact format, tight constraints, precise terminology. It serves them well on analytical comparisons but their brainstorming sessions produce narrow, repetitive ideas. What is happening and what should change?
The tight-specification style is a fixed dial setting near the control end, and that setting fits some task types but not others. On analytical comparisons it works well, because analysis genuinely wants tight constraints and explicit criteria - the heavy specification is exactly right there. But applying that same control-heavy setting to brainstorming is a mismatch. Brainstorming sits at the latitude end of the dial; it needs loose constraints so ideas can diverge. By loading a brainstorm with exact format, tight constraints, and precise terminology, the user narrows the response before divergence can happen, which is precisely why the ideas come out narrow and repetitive.
The change is not to prompt "better" in some general sense but to move the dial with the task type. For analysis, keep the tight specification. For brainstorming, deliberately loosen: state only the goal and a couple of essential guardrails, then ask for volume and range, saving detailed filtering for a later narrowing step. The broader lesson the exam is drawing out is that task type does not just tweak the wording - it changes which components to tighten and which to loosen. A single fixed style, however good, will underperform on whichever of the four types it does not fit.
