Irrelevant background dilutes the prompt and can pull the response off-target, and in longer tasks it consumes room that focused work needs. Two traps sit on this knowledge point, and both are about what Claude can be assumed to know.

The first is assuming Claude can infer organisational context - the audience, prior decisions, the unstated goal - without being told. A scenario shows a generic output and a distractor that blames the model or suggests a bigger model. The credited reading is that the requester withheld context Claude had no way to access, and the fix is to supply it. Generic output is a specification symptom, not a capability limit.

The second is believing a connected data source gives Claude blanket access to everything in that system. A scenario enables a connector and then expects Claude to reference a document outside the granted scope. The reliable reading is that connectors expose only the permitted subset; if the needed data was not in scope, Claude never saw it. Recognising the difference between "connected" and "everything in the system" is exactly what this trap tests.

Worked example

A manager connects Claude to a shared drive, then asks it to summarise 'the latest budget decisions,' and gets a vague, hedged answer. They conclude the connector is broken. What is the more likely explanation and the fix?

Two things could be going wrong, and both are context, not a broken tool. First, "the latest budget decisions" is a context gap: Claude does not know which budget, which time frame, or what counts as a decision here. Even with perfect data access, a vague pointer produces a vague answer. Second, the connector grants access only to the specific files or folders that were permitted. If the budget decisions live in a document outside that granted scope - or were made verbally and never written down - Claude cannot see them at all, however the connector is configured.

The fix works on both fronts. Supply the missing context directly: name the budget, the period, and what a "decision" means for this request, and point at the specific document if you can. Then confirm the needed source is actually within the connector's granted scope rather than assuming "connected" means "sees everything." The manager's conclusion that the tool is broken is the classic misdiagnosis - the real gap is unstated context and scoped access, not a failing connector.
